Leewards, Jamaica set for close finish
published: Friday | July 11, 2008

BRIDGETOWN (CMC):

Kjel Tyson rekindled the hopes of Leeward Islands with his maiden West Indies Youth Championship hundred in their TCL Group Under-19 match against Jamaica yesterday.

Tyson hit a boundary-studded 114, as Leeward Islands, trailing by 13 runs from the first innings, were dismissed for 243 in their second innings in the first hour after tea on the second day of their second round match at Lester Vaughan School.

This left Jamaica to chase 231 for victory, and they reached 54 for two in their second innings when stumps were drawn.

Delivery

Tyson reached his landmark when he drove his 122nd delivery to long off for a single off Donovan Nelson before he was eighth out, when leg-spin bowler Nelson had him caught behind.

Kenroy David then removed Jamaica opener Horace Miller for 24, and Damian Williams inflicted further damage when he had John-Ross Campbell caught behind for a duck to leave Jamaica on 42 for two.

But Mick Blackwood, not out on 12, and Jamaica captain Andre Creary, not out on eight, carried their side through to the close without further incident.

Earlier, Tyson decided to take matters into his own hands, after Leewards slipped to 85 for five.

He played a number of attractive strokes on both sides of the wicket, and he was not afraid to take the aerial route to smite 14 fours and four sixes from 133 balls in just under three hours.

Tyson survived two chances, at 10 and 35, but he remained steadfast, and found Kenroy David a reliable partner. They added 109 for the sixth wicket.

David struck four fours in 40 from 1 1/2 hours of batting before he was caught at mid-on off the occasional off-spin of Creary, and the rest of the Leewards batting crumbled.
