'Kenny', W'moreland clash in play-off
published: Friday | July 11, 2008

Jermaine Lannaman, Gleaner Writer

Bulli

Experienced Westmoreland and youthful Kensington will meet today and tomorrow at Sabina Park to decide which of the two teams will participate in next season's Jamaican Super League (JSL).

The play-off, which could go into a third day on Sunday if the game is not decided in the scheduled two days, will see Westmoreland trying to retain their place in the premier JSL, while for Kensington the aim is to regain promotion to the nation's top-tier cricket competition after a one-year absence.

Westmoreland finished seventh, one place ahead of relegated team, the Jamaica Defence Force, in the eight-team JSL.

Kensington finished second, behind Hanover, in the Jamaica Cricket Association Senior Cup two weeks ago.

Slight favourites

Led by former national youth captain Derval Green, Westmore-land will enter the match slight favourites, with West Indies and Grenada batsman, André Fletcher, who made his international debut in the just-concluded one-day series against Australia, expected to lead their charge.

Former national youth batsman Nicoy Samuels, veteran stroke player Cleveland Davidson and pacer Evan McEnnis are also expected to play a lead role in Westmoreland's quest and, according to Green, they are ready.

"We have done the preparations and the hope is to go out there and do the best we can do," said Green, when asked to comment on his expectations for the game. "It's going to be a good encounter as over the years Kensington and Westmoreland have had good rivalries. It's a matter of who will hold their nerve better."

Thorn in side

Kensington, who will be without the services of two of their main players, opener Horace Miller and pacer Jermaine Cole, who are both in Barbados with the national Under-19 team, will look towards spin twins, left-arm unorthodox Dennis Bulli and leg-spinner Akeem Dewar, for inspiration.

Bulli, with 56 wickets, and Dewar, 44, are the competition's leading wicket takers, and should West Indies pacer Daren Powell make himself available for the encounter, the trio could be thorns in the side of the Westmoreland batsmen.

"Westmoreland are the favourites and, as such, we have nothing to lose," said Bulli, who is captain of the team. "We just have to go out there and play positive cricket and try to throw them off their game.

"It's been rough playing in the Senior Cup and we want to advance to the JSL, so we are going there to give it our all," he concluded.
