Prime Minister Golding has promised to "get tough" with the island's criminals, measures for which he will unveil in Parliament next week. We hope that Mr Golding does not flatter to deceive.
The Government was clearly hoping to bring on board the Opposition for some of its proposed measures, including, perhaps, a loosening of the habeas corpus rules.
But Opposition leader Portia Simpson Miller seemingly prefers to steer a wide berth. It is the easier way to be popular. She can then always argue that "it wasn't me".
But it is Mr Golding's responsibility to lead, and that, often, is about making hard, even unpopular, choices.
