WESTERN BUREAU:

THE TRELAWNY 'juniors' and the Hanover 'seniors' are the early leaders after the first round of the 2008 Western Confederation Inter-Parish football competition which kicked off on Sunday with four games in western Jamaica.

In one of the two Under-17 games played, Trelawny edged Hanover 2-1 at Watson Taylor Park in Lucea, while at the Frome Sports Ground, Westmoreland, St James and Westmoreland played out a 1-1 draw.

In the senior games, Hanover clipped Trelawny 1-0 in the feature game at Watson Taylor Park, while Westmoreland and St James battled to a 1-1 draw in a game lacking in excitement and energy.

The 'junior' game in Lucea was a most enterprising contest and both teams played well in spurts. Trelawny took the lead in the 20th minute when the wily Ramoy Clarke dribbled through the heart of the Hanover defence and slotted past the goalkeeper.

Momentum

With momentum in their favour and Hanover still struggling to settle down, Trelawny doubled their lead in the 44th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Romando Anderson made no mistake from the spot.

However, with the Trelawny team still celebrating their 2-0 lead, Hanover pulled back a goal in the 45th minute. Rushane Forrester caught the Trelawny defenders napping and sped away before drilling a low shot past the advancing goalkeeper, making the final score 2-1.

In the 'senior' game, Hanover had much the better of the game and justifiably got the only goal of the contest. On a smart dribble in the 36th minute, Delton Kerr found himself clear before the goal and fired home easily, giving his team its 1-0 win.

The inter-parish competition, which will see the Under-17 champions taking home the Stephen 'Shorty' Malcolm Trophy and their senior counterparts the Winston 'Twinny Bug' Anglin Trophy, is sponsored to the tune of $500,000 by Montego Bay's Aquasol Theme Park.
