Ten for Saturday's St Leger
published: Thursday | July 10, 2008

TRIPLE CROWN hopeful ALSAFRA was among 10 horses declared at the overnight stage yesterday for the season's final classic, the mile and quarter RJR Jamaica St Leger, which marks its 82nd running at Caymanas Park on Saturday.

The classy filly, winner of the Jamaica Licensed Bookmakers 1000 Guineas in April and the Digicel Jamaica Derby last month, has been drawn at post position five with two-time champion jockey Brian Harding again riding for trainer Fitznahum Williams and co-owners Sherman Clachar and Norman Gordon.

ALSAFRA, who also won the Bigga Jamaica Oaks for fillies over the St Leger distance on April 26, will more than likely start favourite to join a select band of fillies to have won the Triple Crown in the annals of local racing, behind the legendary MONEYMOON in 1937 and SIMPLY MAGIC in 2002.

Significantly, ALSAFRA has been drawn alongside her arch-rival, 2000 Guineas hero ROYAL IMAGE who she beat into second place in the Derby. The Anthony Nunes-trained ROYAL IMAGE is drawn on her inside at post position four.

Completing the field are the Derby third-place finisher JOSIE WALES, under champion jockey Omar Walker, the Derby's fourth placegetter MR BLAIR (Allen Maragh), WHEEL N DEAL (Dane Nelson), MINISTEROFJUSTICE (Richard Mitchell), STAR OF THE SEA (Andre Martin), PLEASURE FLIGHT (Clive Lynch), EX-PLOSIVE CAT (Ian Spence) and EVANDER (Paul Francis).
