Practical ways to fight crime
published: Thursday | July 10, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Several organisations and the Government continue to utilise a number of strategies to fight crime, but there are some approaches I would recommend to both government and civil society to look at, if we want reduce the level of crime in our society. These are:

Visiting every street corner, betting shop, bar, bus terminus were unemployed men congregate and talk to them.

Provide employment opportunities for these men; a lot of them want to work but cannot find jobs. and don't know how to look for work.

Street theatre

Providing street theatre in dealing with conflict. A number of the murders committed are due to the inability of individuals to handle conflict.

Prison life must be hard labour and at the same time educational, so that persons going in will be better persons when they leave these institutions.

Men are in these areas in vast numbers; some are on the margin, just waiting for someone to save them, but no one comes along and they become angry at society, community and family. If we can start by doing practical things, by getting social workers and human resource practitioners into the street, then crime will decrease by 2010.

I am, etc.,
