Talking rubbish
published: Thursday | July 10, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

On last night's ( July 8) evening news a representative of National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) was on speaking about the fire at the Riverton City dump and made a statement that residents of Riverton City nad Portmore would have no health problems as a result of this burn. I am angry that such blatant lies can be offered to the public.

Today, I am in Liguanea engulfed in smoke, my throat and nasal passages are swelling, I have a migraine, my eyes are running like pipes and I have been living on allergy medication since Friday.

Will NSWMA please withdraw that statement. Burning rubber, plastic, styrofoam and other materials found in the dump emit harmful gases when they burn. Worldwide it is known that dumps and waste sites can spark health issues, asthma, sinus and other bronchial ailments...how could it be that our dump is different? Please NSWMA, stop chatting rubbish.

I am, etc.,

SADAN TYRED
