Gov't urged to go solar for street lights
published: Wednesday | July 9, 2008

FORMER ENERGY Minister Phillip Paulwell says the Government should explore the feasibility of using solar-powered batteries to operate street lights.

Paulwell yesterday listed this among several recommendations to combat what he labelled a crisis of staggering proportions facing the nation.

"There are already street lights that we have commissioned that are now run on solar energy. Let us do all of them," Paulwell said in making his contribution to the 2008-2009 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives.

Energy crisis

The former energy minister said the current energy crisis demands urgent action through the immediate implementation of appropriate policies. He said the Government should mandate the National Water Commission, which accounts for 47 per cent of electricity usage in the public sector, to utilise solar power and wind energy to run its distribution systems. This, he said, should be done on a phased basis.

"We are urging action now," Paulwell told the House.

Paulwell said the Government should appoint energy-conservation officers in all government ministries and public-sector agencies.

He also urged that increased incentives be given to businesses and professionals who install energy efficient technology.
