The Editor, Sir:With energy prices on the rise for several years, one would have thought that the previous Government and the current government would have taken a good look at bicycle lanes when planning new highways or upgrades like Washington Boulevard. Notably, the new North Coast Highway is a perfect place to have added a bike lane, and it's not too late to do so. Additionally, perhaps duty charged on the importation of bicycles for resale should be waived to encourage and allow people to purchase bicycles.
Just about every major city in the United States has a bike-to-work week or day, and many have permanent bicycle lanes. Kingston, for example, is compact enough to allow many people to ride to work. Think of the health benefits, as well as the reduction in petrol usage.
Encourage bicycle business
Additionally, the Government or banks could encourage small bicycle repair businesses. It is also time to encourage, if not mandate, the use of only energy-efficient toilets, shower heads, etc, when building new homes and hotel rooms. The light bulbs from Cuba, if not completely distributed, may still help Jamaica with its energy crisis.
Perhaps a national contest on energy-saving ideas could kick off the Government's efforts to educate everyone on simple, painless and inexpensive conservation ideas. Start with our school children, so that they will become accustomed to saving energy and natural resources. They are also great at 'guilting' adults into doing the right thing.
