LETTER OF THE DAY - Friends say Chambers is a Jamaican martyr
published: Monday | June 30, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Enough! Friday, June 27, has to be the day when the prime minister, opposition leader, security minister, opposition spokesman on security, commissioner of police and army chief of defence draw the line on the platitudes after each murder and must come on TV, radio and in the printed press and speak openly and loudly in one voice. ENOUGH!

The chairman of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC), Dougie Chambers, was trying his best to clean up the stench in the JUTC created by politicians who pad the payroll with vultures, bleeding and milking the JUTC to the point where it was impossible to make a profit. 'Drivers' were being paid who did not drive a day. Conductors were pocketing the daily fares. Political hacks were placed on staff, turning up only on payday to collect a cheque. Employess were selling stolen JUTC parts to the JUTC at inflated prices.

Paying the ultimate price

A good man, a bright man, an honourable man took leave from his own accounting firm to lead the charge in the national interest to clean up the mess at the JUTC for J$1 per year! His reward? The ultimate price. His life!

To the gunmen and more so the people who orchestrated this cowardly act, the blood of Douglas is on your hands. Remember when you sleep at nights that his daughter will never be able to say 'I love you Daddy, ever again. Ever!

Prime minister, you need to do a number of unprecedented things NOW.

1. Speak to the nation with the aforementioned persons around you. Use the creativity shown by advertising firms during elections to have a clear, powerful message made and have the TV stations rebroadcast this at their expense in the national interest every day with the same frequency and intensity when the election messages were bombarding us.

2. Co-opt the DJs, sound system owners, discos to create voice-overs with strong, powerful street messages played at every session as a rule.

3. Order radio stations to stop playing all gun-related garbage now and anyone promoting 'informer fe dead' must be treated as a criminal and charged for inciting murder.

4. Invite churches, service clubs, schools, businesses to dedicate a half day per month to do community service work to spread the message.

It would be very interesting if the police were to capture these savages and in the process of collecting evidence, the 48 hours would elapse before they complete the exercise. I'm sure mis-guided human rights groups would lobby for them to be released to murder the witnesses and wreak havoc on society. You are defending the wrong set of humans. ENOUGH!

My friend, Doug, may your soul rest in peace. You are a Jamaican martyr. May your work not be in vain.

We are, etc.,
