Tighter scrutiny for police vehicles
published: Saturday | June 28, 2008

Scarlett

WESTERN BUREAU:

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is considering introducing tracking devices to better monitor its fleet of vehicles, according to the inspector general, Deputy Commissioner of Police Charles Scarlett.

He was addressing members of the Rotary Club of Montego Bay East at their installation dinner at the Holiday Inn Sun Spree Resort in Rose Hall, St James, on Thursday night.

"We will be better able to deploy our resources and ensure that personnel are doing exactly what their task is," Scarlett said.

Tightening control

He added: "We are tightening control to ensure those responsible for the management of our resources are held far more accountable."

Scarlett said the force should also see a significant decrease in fuel usage, when the vehicle tracking system is implemented.

Turning to the issue of corruption within the force, the deputy police commissioner revealed that action had been taken against 44 police personnel since the start of the year.

He believes the JCF will never reach its optimum potential until it ejects corrupt officers. As a result, Scarlett said significant resources have been invested in the force's anti-corruption initiative.
