Holness postpones GSAT clarification
published: Wednesday | June 25, 2008

Education Minister Andrew Holness yesterday failed to deliver on his promise to explain in Parliament, the process by which the top performers in the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) were selected.

However, Holness sought to assure that he would make the statement in Gordon House today.

He said he would clearly outline the process of marking, grading and ranking students.

"For too long the GSAT mechanism has been kept a secret when it shouldn't be, because it is a national examination," Holness said, adding that he would be outlining the steps to ensure there is transparency in the system.

He explained that it was not possible to make the statement in Parliament yesterday, because Robert Montague, minister of state in the Office of the Prime Minister, had a timed sectoral presentation.

The education minister's intervention follows a demand by some school administrators, teachers and parents for an explanation of the method used to arrive at the top performers.
