Chiefs go for clincher
published: Monday | June 23, 2008

LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter

Braves Chiefs enter tonight's elimination game against Selassie Gardens with a driven mindset as they look to wrap up the Homestyle Juices Southern Conference Division One Basketball League, at the National Stadium court, beginning at 7:45.

"The most important thing is complacency," said Braves coach Ludlow Barker when asked of the one thing that can stop his team from winning tonight, as they aim to make their way back to the National Basketball League.

The three-time national champions (1992, '93, '96), who have been competing in the second tier league for the last two seasons, got a pivotal 57-53 Game One win on Friday night in the best-of-three final series.

MVP candidate, centre Brian Grant, led Braves with 15 points and 18 rebounds, but Barker didn't receive much from his other top two scorers, Lascelles Johnson and Jermaine Davis.

"If we get their (Johnson and Davis) contribution, we should be alright," Barker added. "We didn't win by a comfortable margin so we can't be com-placent. We have to stick to our defence-first mentality because they're a high-scoring team."

First loss in 23 games

In Game One, Grant received help from Lloyd Cruikshank (12) and Howard Edwards (11), while Travis Thomas (10 points) led Selassie Gardens.

Friday night's loss was the first for Selassie Gardens in 23 games.

Shooting guards Richard Willis and Oneil Christie had a tough time finding the bottom of the net, but the latter contributed in other ways with six rebounds, seven steals and five assists.

The fourth quarter was also telling for Selassie as they were outscored by seven points (20-13).

However, a repeat perform-ance of Game One is unlikely by the determined and talented team.

"I expect to see a very physical Selassie Gardens team," noted Barker. "They'll try and get more of their shooters open and we just have to absorb their runs then form a run of our own. But it all starts on the defensive end."

Preceding the final, Meadows All-Stars and Jamaica Defence Force will play in the third-place play-off, starting at 6 p.m.
