Trinidad and Tobago shook off the threat of early elimination by beating Bermuda 2-0 (half-time 1-0) in their CONCACAF World Cup qualifying second-leg match at the Bermuda National Sports Centre last night.
T&T, beaten 2-1 in a shock result at home in the first leg, now advance to the three-group CONCACAF semi-final round of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa - 3-2 on aggregate.
All-important goals
Darryl Roberts (10th minute) and Stern John (69th) netted the all-important goals for the Soca Warriors.
Haiti, Cuba, the United States of America, Suriname and Cuba were other CONCACAF teams that recorded return-leg wins yesterday, as they also confirmed their spots in the 12-nation semi-finals.
In Curaçao, the Haitians, who were somewhat fortunate as they benefited from a 77th-minute own goal by Eugene Martha, beat the Netherlands Antilles 1-0 (half-time 0-0) to decide the tie 1-0 on aggregate after the first leg had ended goalless in Port-Au-Prince the previous weekend.
Cuba hammered Antigua and Barbuda 4-0 (half-time 2-0) at the Pedro Marrero Stadium to take the tie 8-3 on aggregate after they had won the first leg 4-3 a week earlier in Antigua. Robert Linares led the Cuban onslaught with a hat-trick (10th, 47th, 53rd), while Jeniel Marquez (69th) accounted for the other goal.
Win on Aggregate
Suriname eliminated neighbours Guyana 2-1 (half-time 2-0) at the Guyana National Stadium to advance 3-1 on aggregate after they had won the first leg 1-0 in Paramaribo.
Suriname's goals were scored by Germaine Sergio van Dijk (11th) and Clifton Sandvliet (36th), while Nigel Codrington pulled back a late goal for the homesters at the 84th.
The US, which won the opening leg 8-0 in Los Angeles, clipped Barbados 1-0 (half-time 1-0) at Kensington Oval to secure a 9-0 aggregate. Eddie Lewis scored at the 21st minute.
