The Editor, Sir:
The interesting article by John Rapley last Thursday pointed out changes caused by a reversal of fortunes due to globalisation. It seems logical that Jamaica should focus on agricultural products catering to a five-million-tourist trade.
Providing oranges, mangoes, pineapples, rice, eggs, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, jerk chicken, fish etc., to these visitors would be a worthwhile economic development plan.
Less talk, more action
If only Jamaica would get serious, have less talk and get on with the planning and implementation process. There wouldn't even be a need to worry about transportation costs - the market would be right there on the island.
Added to this is the glaring need to harness energy from the sun, and composting garbage for fertiliser. The spin-off effects of these and other ideas are obvious. It is frustrating to see so little activity towards this end.
I am, etc.,
