The Editor, Sir:There was a time when we were uniquely West Indian - Jamaican, Barbadian, Trinidadian - just plain West Indian. Our value system spoke in glowing terms of high morals and values. In the Caribbean today, we allow ourselves to be marginalised for an insidious amount of small change.
We invite sexual perversion of all sorts to the shores of our island homes, in order to sell records, vacation packages and tourism at large. Whether it is the hideous hedonism on Jamaica's shores or some other itinerant sexual escapade, we have mortgaged away the uniqueness of our decency to the highest bidder - shame on us.
Without vision
You see, "Where there is no vision the people shall perish." Though we may be poor in wealth, why should we be poor in values? Sex should be private, and should be between a man and a woman. Our bedrooms should be private, and public sexual exhibitionism should not be acceptable. Filthy American and European tourists should be dealt the severe hand of the law for introducing their sexual perversities to our island nations. Stop! Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad. Pick yourselves up from the proverbial Sodom-and-Gomorrah destiny that certainly lies ahead, for these acts of immorality.
