The gospel community is now in a state of sadness following reports that former Grace Thrillers lead singer, Shirley Willis, is in a coma after an accident on Wednesday.
Her son Noel Willis, who is now lead singer for Grace Thrillers, says she is in a critical condition but he is optimistic of a full recovery.
He says she is being treated at the Kingston Public Hospital after the car she was driving collided with a bus at an intersection in Greater Portmore on Wednesday night.
"We are just praying and hoping for the best. She is not able to speak but I see signs of her moving her arms and feet. I think she can hear because everytime I say 'Mommy' she moves her hands," he told The Sunday Gleaner.
"I heard that she opened one of her eyes halfway but she put it back down. We've seen little improvement day-to-day. She is still in a coma but we are still hopeful."
Signs of improvement
Noel says the doctors were planning to do surgery on his mother but have decided to monitor her condition as they have seen signs of improvement. He says a swelling on her face has shrunk, so that is another positive sign. He says he has been getting numerous calls from well-wishers.
Fellow gospel artiste Omari says he found out about Shirley's accident on Thursday, but he could not visit her because she is not allowed any visitors.
Saddened
"I am saddened but still encouraged 'cause the Lord is going to take her through it. The Lord has brought her through so much," said Omari.
However, gospel artiste Goddy Goddy received the sad news when The Sunday Gleaner called him for a comment.
"Wow, wow! It's the first I am hearing about that. At this time the most I can do is send up some prayers and as soon as I get the chance, I will go to the hospital," he said.
