EDITORIAL - Let firms use their NHT contributions to create jobs
There is no question that Prime Minister Golding and his Jamaica Labour Party came to bat on a rather sticky wicket, although much of it was of their own making. There is no disputing, however, that the global economic situation is far from pretty.

Security and human rights

Jamaica is at a crossroads. In the month of May the murder rate increased by about 100 per cent. This is an unprecedented rate of increase. If this continues unabated an already murderous society will come close to the point of collapse. (Robotham)

MPs and the public trust

Poor Shahine Robinson has been saddled with the miracle-working task of turning members of Parliament into angels - or to at least getting the little 'devils' to behave. James Madison, second president of the United States, once famously remarked that "if men were angels, no government would be necessary". (Henry)

Detention!

This column might have been written earlier but I was detained by the police for much longer than expected. In fact, they held me for two days without charge and had me reporting to Harman Barracks and another location twice after being released. (Taylor)

Guess who's coming to dinner?

When Stanley Kramer made the movie Guess Who's Coming to Dinner in 1967, he intended it to be a giant mirror in which America would collectively see itself. For beneath the imposing economic and military superstructure of the world's most powerful country, there was the ugliness of racial hatred, prejudice and bigotry. (Wilson)
