Blake heads Junior team
published: Wednesday | June 18, 2008

Natasha Ruddock (centre) leads Shermaine Williams (left) and Janelle Gordon while competing in the girls' 100m hurdles at the Junior Athletics Trial at the G.C. Foster College on Sunday. Ruddock, who fell after hitting a hurdle, got up sometime after to complete the event in 31.32 seconds. Williams went on to win in a world-leading 13.22 seconds and Gordon (right) finished second in 14.21. Both Ruddock and Williams were named on Jamaica's squad for the World Junior Championships in Poland from July 8-13. - Ian Allen/Staff Photographer

World Junior medallist and National 100m record holder Yohan Blake heads Jamaica's 31-member squad for the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships.

Blake, who won the 100m bronze at the last Championships in Beijing, China, is the only returning individual medallist in the squad for the July 8-13 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Dexter Lee and Ramone McKenzie, the World Youth 100m and 200m champions, respectively, along with Natasha Ruddock and Shermaine Williams, silver medallists from the 2005 and 2007 World Youth Championships, respectively, are the other big names in the squad.

University of Connecticut fresh-man Trish-Ann Hawthorne, who missed last weekend's trials because of NCAA duties for her school, is the only unknown name in the squad.

Jamaican-born Hawthrone, 18, who left Jamaica for United States at a tender age, is the fastest female sprinter in the squad with her personal best 11.44 and 23.35 times recorded early this year.
