Blood inheritance

Question: Who is your hero ?

Answer: Encoded deep in the fibres of the twisted double helix, resilience floods the veins and arteries of the African in the diaspora.

Fifty million were uprooted from their West African territories. One-third, endured the injustices and horrors of the 'Middle Passage'. Generations, physically and psychologically subjected to the brutal traumas of colonialism.

Yet today, the African in the Americas and the Caribbean persists. He lives and pursues life.

We are still here.

Buoyed by resilience, we survived slavery and political disenfranchisement. In time, we will overcome their sequels; neo-imperialism and oppressive white economic dominance.

Pierced by the arrows of illiteracy, unabated poverty, institutionalised prejudice, political abuse of trust, imbalanced development policies, we are wounded, distracted, hindered, but not defeated.

Resilience rises above the attempts to sabotage black pride, and we slowly learn to walk again in self-love.

Nations compete for short-lived accolades of military, economic and technological prowess. They are blind to the real source of power.

Hybrid New World cultures, steeped in African origins, fascinate and magnetise the world, discreetly invading, permeating, influencing, converting.

In time, Africa triumphs.

The soul keeper

Sarah woke up with a strange feeling.

A feeling of someone watching over her.

She sprang out of bed and headed for the bathroom.

After washing her face, she heard a voice saying,

"I am coming for you soon".

Sarah looked in the mirror and there he was,

All dressed in black.

He then said, "Let me offer you rest,

For your soul is under attack".

She smashed the mirror and cut her hand.

The wound was dressed with tissue

Supported by an elastic band.

Observing the tissue changing from white to red,

Sarah just can't seem to get this man out of her head.

With all hopes of getting high one last time,

She finally took a dose that blew her mind.

From the window he emerged,

Looking at Sarah prostrate on the floor.

Her soul was purged and taken though an open door.

The Period of Growth

I strut in the shadows of emptiness

A soul now lost in time

The replica of love's faltered pride

Where innocence no longer abides

While blind eyes make our choices still

And pain and doubt defiles

Hope dwindles in the summer's tides

And truth is made of lies

A time where faith and fortitude

Slowly withers from existence

Writing songs of poor choices made

That echo in the distance

Yet once again love will come

And steal what's left of joy

And a heart will awaken to reality

The heart not of a boy.

Always love you

To love someone with all my heart

Throwing caution to the wind for the one in my thoughts

Knowing that I'll always be where I should be

In love with you as you're all I need

So many reasons to love your smile

As they so often run through my mind

At times when I miss you my heart feels weak

Moments of loneliness everything but sweet

Lonely heart beats missing your touch

Hungering for the love I cherish so much

To cherish each moment I spend with you

Being blessed with smiles and having dreams come true

Memories in my heart so close to me

Reminding me of the angel I live to please

Reminded so often of moments we spend

By memories I have of my heart's best friend

So often it seems I'm living in a dream

A dream fulfilled as you are with me

No matter the distance or what I do

I'll always be there, I'll always love you.
