Postal theft
published: Friday | June 6, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

On May 26, my sister registered a letter to me at Spaldings Post Office in Clarendon. Enclosed in the letter, mailed from the General Post Office in Kingston, was J$5,500 and US$100. I received the letter on May 29, with only $4,500 and the US$ bill was missing. I am writing this letter in disgust and disappointment as the money was sent to clear up some outstanding utilities and other bills. I am disappointed that we cannot trust the postal system.

I had buried my mother over a month earlier. The household of nine members included a 98-year-old blind and bed-ridden grandmother. Part of this money was to purchase food for the family, all of whom are unemployed. It is a pity we can't trust the postal system.

I am, etc.,
