Creating a Jamaican theme park
published: Thursday | May 29, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

As we look for more attractions for our tourism industry and local entertainment how about a Jamaican Theme Park (A Jamaican Disney World)? I would like to put forward some ideas for such a project.

Jamaica has a rich history which we have not highlighted enough. For instance, the history of Port Royal, Rose Hall Great House, our National Heroes, our Maroon People, our rich African heritage, our music, our story telling, our art and culture and more.

Attraction called Port Royal 1907

Walk with me and try to visualise an attraction called Port Royal 1907. You get into a pirate ship carriage on water which takes you on a voyage around a replica of Port Royal in that era, with all the antics of pirating taking place around you.

You get involved in a fight with cannon being fired from Fort Charles and your ship or your mast suddenly collapses and your ship shakes; you now realise you are experiencing an earthquake. It may be a take-off of (Pirates of the Caribbean 'Disney World' and earthquake 'Universal Studios') but with a Jamaican historical flavour.

Mixture of animation and real people

We are looking at a mixture of animation and real people acting out the parts. Now visualise a tour of Rose Hall Great House riding on a black buggy drawn by a rolling calf blowing fire, you see Annie Palmer at different stages of her life story, coloured by flashes of lightning and eerie screams as special effects. Can you see it?

This could be a place to promote all Jamaica has to offer as a people to the outside world. Imagine a walk through a Jamaican village, an Indian village, a Chinese village, an African village stopping to see cultural dances and tasting their food or just relaxing by the river with mermaid and her golden chair.

Take photographs with Anancy and other folk heroes, go to the craft village to see how local crafts are made.

If you can visualise all this then your mind can go wild with other concepts.

Our Government, artists, visualisers, planners and investors could get together and look at the possibility of creating such a venture, not to mention the creation of jobs, jobs and more jobs and a way to relax your mind in a make-believe world.

Surely we can't compete with Orlando, but we can do it our way, our Jamaican way. So, welcome to Village Jamaica 'Then and Now'.

I am, etc.,
