Relationships - Is your man a 'secret agent'?
published: Saturday | May 24, 2008

Anthony Meerak, Relationship Writer

Insecurity and lack of trust drive many guys to constantly stalk their girlfriends in public. If you're not sure you're dating Agent 007, here are some telltale signs to look out for.

  • Title: the bodyguard

    Scenario:

Girlfriend: I am going to the mall with Vicki and Debbie.

Agent 007: Yuh mad! Yuh nuh see how many people a dead a road? It's best you stay home.

Mission: His aim is to keep his eyes on you by limiting your ability to make new friends or sustain previous platonic relationships. In one word, QUARANTINE. Soon you will have no friends at all, life will become monotonous and you'll be nothing more than his little lapdog, where he leads, you'll follow.

Not even your family will be exempt. Perhaps he'll discourage you from taking advice from your mother, or urge you to stop visiting your sister because he thinks they are a 'negative influence' in your life.

  • Title: GPRS navigation

    Scenario:

Agent 007: Empress, weh yuh deh? What yuh doing?

Girlfriend: I am on the road with Dian.

Agent 007: Yuh tek man fi eediat, mek me talk to har.

Mission: He wants to know where you are whenever you're not with him. Until you subconsciously feel that he's watching you ... everywhere, every time. His motive is to make a pre-emptive strike to push you into dumping any thoughts or plans even if they're a figment of his imagination - of cheating.

Who'd have the temerity to cheat when the Secret Service is watching your every move? This paranoid attitude may stem from low self-esteem or a guilty conscience that may have resulted from his cheating on you.

  • Title: Mr Friendly

    Scenario:

Girlfriend: Mark, this is my boyfriend James.

Agent 007: Hey, Mark, you look familiar. Which community yuh come from?

Mission: Getting to know his woman's friends is a sure way to keep tabs on them. If you told him a story that he doesn't believe, he can always justify it by calling a friend who was accompanying you. Through this network, he can always find out what you are doing at the office, whether you are a naughty or a nice co-worker.

  • Title: Telephone lover

    Scenario: (Landline rings.)

Agent 007: Hello, who would you like to speak to? She's coming.

Girlfriend: Hi, David, I haven't heard from you in a while.(He comes on the couch and sits beside you.)

Mission: Whether it's your brother or a long-time schoolmate, no one escapes his radar. Whenever someone calls, especially if it is a man, he needs to know what the conversation is about and who the person is. If there is another telephone in your house, always check to ensure he is not on the other end listening.

Common cases where men develop these characteristics

  • Older man dating younger girl.

  • Men who have low self-confidence.

  • Men who have been cheated on in a past relationship.

  • Men who are cheating in their present relationship.
