It was a jubilant and enthusiastic Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, who hailed and welcomed captains and crew members aboard all 10 vessels participating in the Clipper Round-the-World yacht race, including a Jamaican entry.
The traditional opening ceremony and prize giving was held on Thursday at the Errol Flynn Marina, formerly the Port Antonio Marina, in Portland, witnessed by a large crowd, including business operators, politicians, hoteliers and other tourism interests.
"Our team in the clipper yacht race will be victorious in the leg of race from Port Antonio to New York, and I will be there to see it when it wins that leg," Bartlett added. "I congratulate the winner of this leg from Panama to Port Antonio, but I say to you, watch out for our Jamaican team, because they are now on home turf."
Placing
The boat, Hull and Humber, skippered by Danny Watson from Kent in the United Kingdom, was the first-place winner in the leg from Panama to Port Antonio. Second place went to the boat, New York, skippered by Jerry Crew, and third place went to Glasgow, skippered by Hannah Jenner.
Jamaica's team, with its boat Jamaica, finished eighth.
The clipper yacht competition will continue with race 11 from Port Antonio to New York , race 12 from New York to Nova Scotia in Canada, race 13 from Nova Scotia to Cork in Ireland, and will climax with race 14 from Ireland to Liverpool.
