The Editor, Sir:

On reading the interview with Danville Walker in The Sunday Gleaner, I was appalled to learn that sensitive positions like commissioner of police, chief of staff of the Jamaica Defence Force and also, incredibly, the governor general, can be held by dual citizens. What absolute hypocrisy then when members of Parliament and directors of elections are barred!

I also seem to remember learning that the really sensitive position of governor of the Bank of Jamaica could only be held by a 'full Jamaican', a position which I fully support. Incidentally what nationality was Mr Bussieres? Just asking!

Too many to mention

In Tuesday's Gleaner, Andrew Webb asks, "Which American politician holds allegiance to another country and takes up public office?" I believe the examples would be too numerous to list, but I'm sure Mr Webb has heard of the present California governor - Arnold Schwarzenegger (an Austrian citizen). Una Clarke (a Jamaican) also held public office in New York!

I am sure this debate will rage on for some time, but I believe there should at least be some consistency. Alice in Wonderland would certainly feel at home in Jamaica.
