THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE REALITY with this country's national security is that less than one per cent of the entire population is responsible for making us live in fear and hopelessness. This less-than-one per cent has increased our national spending on formal and informal security measures, while decreasing our productive working hours and opportunities.
Estimates according to the World Bank suggest that by reducing the homicide rate by one-third from its current level, we could more than double our rate of per capita economic growth. In other words, this less-than-one per cent is robbing our collective future.
So, can Trevor MacMillan and/or Derrick Smith do a better job in stopping this less-than-one per cent?
Cry outrage
No! We, as a society with 99 per cent strong, need to start standing up and not just saying 'I'm outraged', but being outraged; being outraged at the fact that the prime minister could add another set of costs to us by paying one more member of Cabinet. Outraged at the fact that less than one per cent of the country is holding us ransom.
Until we say in a collective voice, 'Enough!' there will never be any change, or a best man, for the job. The only name or title that matters and that can do this job is the 99 per cent of Jamaicans.
I am, etc.,
