Mucho Gusto to win Frazer Memorial

MUCHO GUSTO ... looks hard to beat in today's Frankie Frazer Memorial Cup over 1300 metres.

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

OVERNIGHT ALLOWANCE horses take the spotlight at Caymanas Park today in the annual renewal of the Frankie Frazer Memorial Cup over 1300 metres, to be contested by nine starters.

This is in fact one of three trophy races on the 11-race programme. The others are the Master Blaster Trophy in honour of the most successful horse in the history of local racing, having won 34 races, to be run in two divisions, and the $180,000 claiming race for the Dr David 'Jack' Radix Memorial Cup over the circular nine course, to be contested by eight starters.

Division II of the Master Blaster Trophy has attracted nine starters and should be closely contested among the likes of ISLA, THE BEST MAN, JET SKI D'OR, PRINCESS LORNA and RHYMAT.

With ISLA badly drawn on the far rails, I narrow it down to JET SKI D'OR and THE BEST MAN to be ridden by champion jockey Omar Walker and five-time champion Trevor Simpson, respectively.

Based on his fair fourth (beaten 7 1/2 lengths) to EXPLOSIVE PEAK over the course in overnight allowance company on April 12, JET SKI D'OR, now dropped in class and given a positive change of rider, gets the nod.

Division I

Division I has also attracted nine starters, but here it looks a cinch for the Gary Subratie-trained filly RIO INFINITO, who gets the ideal trip on this occasion.

RIO INFINITO, having failed by only a head to stave off the rank outsider JCD SLEW over 1200 metres on April 16, is even better suited to the straight and with only 52kg, should win from FELICIDAD (fitter) and OUTFITHER.

Meanwhile, the Anthony 'Baba' Nunes-trained MUCHO GUSTO should return with a bang in the Frankie Frazer Memorial Cup to be contested by nine starters including the recent winner PRINCE TERRON, GOOD COMPANY, TOBAGO and SMOOTHABILITY.

The winner should definitely come from this group, but MUCHO GUSTO, though sparingly raced, has looked so sharp at exercise that he will prove hard to deny from the convenient mark of 53kg and stable jockey Shane Ellis aboard.

Gusto ready

MUCHO GUSTO, who was one of the top three-year-olds last year, having won the Prince Consort Stakes and finished a close second to RUM TALK in the 2000 Guineas, galloped 5 1/2 furlongs in a brisk 1:06.2 by a minute flat at exercise on Monday morning and none will report fitter.

The 4-y-o son of Law Of The Sea - Sweet Desire left us on a winning note January 1 when slamming rivals over this trip in the New Year's Day Trophy, covering the distance in the good time of 1:19.2. He ought to be followed.

Other firm fancies on the card are MAMBO to turn the tables on RED GENERAL in the Dr 'Jack' Radix Memorial Trophy, THREE QUEEN in the first, GAMBOA in the second, LIKKLE BIT in the fifth and FOREVER MINE in the nightpan.
