After surviving harsh criticism by human rights activists for his involvement in a number of controversial killings, Senior Superintendent Reneto Adams said he had done nothing in the past that will haunt his conscience when he retires from the police force in August.
"Among the things that will stand out in my mind is the quality police service that I delivered to the Jamaican people," said Adams.
The colourful cop is now a character in the local television series, Royal Palm Estate, playing the role of businessman, Kevin Jermaine.
While the residents of Kraal have vowed not to forgive Adams and his colleagues, the senior officer who spoke with The Gleaner on Monday said he regretted the loss of life. However, he stressed that civil society must be mindful of the conditions under which members of the security forces work when they are fired on by criminals.
Adams said his greatest regret was the death of a key source who helped him with an investigation.
Source exposed
The officer said the source got exposed during the investigations conducted by local and overseas investigators.
"It was a total secret, I was the only who knew of the source, but he later got exposed and was killed like a common criminal," Adams said.
The people of Kraal believe their wounds will never heale. Just under 200 people reside in this poor, rural district, many of whom do farming for a living.
The winding, mile-long, bumpy roadway into the community is a disaster. This is a big obstacle for farmers who want to transport their agricultural produce to the market.
"We are a forgotten community, right now we don't have any running water, not even street lights," a member of the community told The Gleaner.
