Prime Minister Bruce Golding has told Jamaican students from various universities in Cuba that those there on scholarships would be covered under the Government's programme of financial support.
Golding, along with other govern-ment ministers, arrived in the capital Havana yesterday morning for a three-day official visit.
According to a release from the Office of the Prime Minister, Golding began his schedule with a meeting with Jamaican descendants living in Cuba and Jamaican students studying there.
Unfair system
Speaking at the Jamaican embassy yesterday, Golding said the system, whereby the Government provided financial support for students under the bilateral and CARICOM pro-grammes, but not for those benefiting from a scholarship arrangement between the former People's National Party administration and the Communist Party, was unfair.
"If you are Jamaicans studying here, we have a responsibility to all of you. Therefore, I intend to arrange that no matter what was the source of your scholarship, once you are here as Jamaican students, you are to be included in the programme of financial support that we offer," the prime minister said.
Golding also said he would be meeting with the minister of finance to assess what adjustments could be made to the US$1,200 allocation to each student, a figure he deemed inadequate.
