Newly refurbished Ambassador Theatre set to come alive today

The historic Ambassador Theatre in Trench Town - a theatre which once hosted some of Jamaica's most memorable entertainment events, but which has since fallen into disrepair, is expected to come alive again this evening with its newly refurbished screen scheduled to be commissioned back into service at an event designed primarily for adolescents of Trench Town and Majesty Gardens.

The event included a 'taste' of the extreme sports team's 'Living It' presentation - which will be a main feature at the Best Dressed 50Fest tomorrow and Sunday at King's House East grounds - and was to be followed by a brief gospel presentation and then a movie.

In addition to the repair and painting of the cinema-size screen, which has been facilitated by major funding support from Jamaica Broilers Group, the revived entertainment activities at the theatre are assisted by a multi-media projector which has been donated to Joy Town Community Development Foundation by Delta Ministries - an interdenominational evangelical organisation that supports United States and local churches around the world by specialising in short-term and mid-term projects which address people's physical needs, while also addressing their spiritual needs. Delta raised the US$2,000 needed to purchase the 4,500 lumens multimedia projector - handing it over to Joy Town for use in educational and recreational presentations at the theatre.

Construction of concrete roof

The work at the Ambassador Theatre also involves construction of a concrete roof for three rooms, which will be used for community training in the performing arts -with Jamaica Broilers Group committing some J$1 million to the entire theatre project as part of the legacy benefits it is giving to Jamaica as the company observes its 50th anniversary.

An additional $0.4 million - representing the value of the time contributed by volunteers to the project - brings to $1.4 million the total value of the amount allocated to this stage of the refurbishing of the Ambassador Theatre.

The Ambassador is to retain its original design, while being transformed into a multi-purpose cultural centre. Until Joy Town's educational block is built, one of the rooms now being built will accommodate a computer laboratory, modelled on the out-standing one developed at the Iris Gelley Primary School.
