With Honour upsets in feature
published: Thursday | May 1, 2008

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

YESTERDAY'S MID-WEEK programme at Caymanas Park produced three notable upsets, including WITH HONOUR at 20-1 in the day's feature, Race No. 4 in the CTL Claiming Series ($210,000 and less) over 1500 metres.

In addition to WITH HONOUR, other upsets came via GALLAVANTER at 28-1 in the fifth race over 1200 metres and RIGMAROLE at 14-1 in the ninth race over 1100 metres for open allowance horses.

WITH HONOUR capitalised on a poor ride from Javour Simpson aboard 6-5 favourite FAST FLYER to beat her by three-quarters of a length, with highly fancied SONNY 'B GOOD, also at 6-5, finishing third in a field of eight.

Sluggish start

Ridden by in-form jockey Richard Mitchell for owner/trainer Gary Griffiths, WITH HONOUR overcame a sluggish start from the number one post position, made a ground-saving run on the inside entering the straight to catch and beat long-time leader FAST FLYER (swerved out closing stages) in a driving finish.

Javour Simpson made amends for his indifferent ride on FAST FLYER with a post-to-post victory aboard the Gary Subratie-trained RIGMAROLE for owner Keith Duncan. RIGMAROLE won by 3 1/4 lengths from GRACE MARIE in a field of seven.

Devastating run

The Richie Phillipps-trained GALLAVANTER, a chance ride for Andrew Thomas (replacing David McKenzie), produced a devastating last furlong run (wide outside) for an upset win in the fifth race over 1200 metres, getting up in the nick of time to catch 13-1 shot HELTA SKELTA.

Neither the Pick-9 nor Super-6 was caught.

Trainer Anthony Nunes saddled three winners in MACHISMO, FLAFAMAN and MS MARTHA BRAE on the 11 race programme.
