The Editor, Sir:
Jamaica and the world at large are facing a grave problem which is greatly affecting three fundamental and critical areas of our lives. The problem: our blatant disregard for the natural environment and its link to life on earth. The areas affected: water, food and energy.
For years, individuals and institutions advocating for environmental protection and sustainable development have warned world leaders about the possible negative impact of our economic and development policies in theory and practice.
Environmental issues
Today we are faced with issues from global warming and climate change to oil price increases, food security threats, and the lack of an adequate supply of potable water.
On behalf of the environmental advocates, I reiterate two solutions: (1). Focus on making environmental consumer products more affordable for us through subsidies and other economic instruments. (2). Promote food security by helping all Jamaicans to own land so that they can become self-sufficient through the toiling of these lands to provide the very basic food items for their families.
I am, etc.,
