Dual citizenship and the law
published: Thursday | May 1, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The People's National Party (PNP) has declared that it is not trying to usurp the democratic will of the people of Western Portland. They claim that all they are doing is upholding the law of the land.

However, I wonder about their sincerity. It can take months for the full process of renouncing American citizenship to be completed. Therefore, is Ian Hayles qualified to sit in the House of Representatives on behalf of the people of Western Hanover?

If it was that the PNP was truly interested in upholding the Constitution, then they would not only have filed petitions against Labourites, they would have filed petitions against their own too.

Usurping power

Therefore, it is clear as day that the PNP is not interested in upholding the Constitution, it is interested in usurping power from the people of Western Portland, and trying to become government through the backdoor!

The democratic system is based on choice. The freedom of the electorate to choose anyone who in their opinion is able to represent them well. Whether the person has dual or triple or quadruple citizenship is none of my business and should not be any of yours either!

What is important is that the people are the only ones who should be allowed to decide who it is that they want to elect by voting for the person who in their opinion is best able to represent them.

If not, why bother talk about democracy!

I am, etc.,
