Thursday talk - HOTTEST TOPICS ON THE COCKTAIL CIRCUIT
published: Thursday | May 1, 2008

What's up here?

1. Talk about justice not being blind! Some in the legal community are still trying to come to grips with the recent ruling in the courts that saw the chief justice awarding costs against the victor in a recent constitutional matter. As they say, the practice has always been that costs are awarded against the losing party.

A mad rush to the altar

2. When the bachelor hurriedly tied the knot to his live-in lover in January, there were many who wondered why the sudden rush to the altar; as indeed, the said bachelor had dated a string of beautiful women before, and many thought he was too fond of playing the field to end his tenure as one of Kingston's most eligible bachelors. Well, January, February, March, April ... And the wife is now quite visibly pregnant, with some saying the baby is expected soon, so you do the math!

Oh, dear

3. Poor Miss Piggy. Not that she is one to be pitied. But first she lost her husband to the friend. And now she has lost the management of the singing one, to the same (ex) friend.

Another sale is on

4. People are saying that the people who are always lambasting their betters are doing so well that they are now having another sale!

Staying the course

5. The consensus is, do not expect the chairman to be going anywhere any time soon, except back to the boardroom as, with an election likely, they cannot afford to ruffle his feathers at this time.

Spanking new SUVs

6. Some are asking for a governmental motor vehicle policy which will see Cabinet ministers and junior ministers all getting their vehicles from a predetermined pool, instead of the existing ad hoc policy which has led to several members of the new government 'sporting' spanking new SUVs.

Ringing endorsement

7. Why the visit by the Chief to Portland a week before the ruling? Why the ringing public endorsement? Seems the event and subsequent ruling have caused some jitters about the separation of powers.

Are they taxmen?

8. They are dubbed the 'taxmen', as word is that these three have an unofficial yet very active 10 per cent levy on those wishing to do business.

Special skills

9. What special skills does he take to the table that would account for him being named to sit on all these boards?

Genuine or a vendetta?

10. The raid is causing some to question if it was really a genuine operation by the police, or the execution of a vendetta, due to the souring of relations?
