Growing rice, 'oasis in a desert'
published: Wednesday | April 30, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE IDEA of the Jamaican Government working with the Guyanese to grow rice locally is like an oasis in a desert just waiting to be discovered. I must congratulate the Government for offering the olive branch to the Guyanese. If the Government does not relent on this novel idea, I am positive that this branch will bear fruit.

A few days ago, the uncivil behaviour in the parliamentary debate made me feel that "things fall apart; the centre (parliament) cannot hold; mere anarchy is loosed upon the world." It is ironic that today, I feel a sense of renewed hope, because the Government seems to be thinking of the Jamaican people in a practical way.

Genuine smiles

I can tell you, Mr Prime Minister, that laughter from the audience was lined with dark clouds. Today, there are genuine smiles and gratitude from well-thinking Jamaicans who feel that you are making a positive move by fostering the spirit of independence and of development. I really hope that you will follow through with the deal.

It is of interest that corporate Jamaica endorses the local production of rice. They are putting their money where their mouths are. The ball is in your court, Mr Prime Minister, to prove to the Jamaican people that actions will speak louder than words. You will do everything necessary to make preliminary plans a reality. This is a golden opportunity for the Government to lead the country on a breath-taking path of growth and prosperity.

I am, etc.,
