Arnett Gardens can breath a little easier with three games to go after a 1-0 win over St George's of Portland kept them out of the relegation zone of the National Premier League yesterday, at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Jerome Waite, the coach of Arnett Gardens, was a relieved man.
"It was a tough match. We played a tactical game, but, all in all, we pulled it off, got our chance and made use of it," he said.
All-important goal
The all-important goal that left Arnett with 39 points, the same as St George's, was scored from the penalty spot by Horace Sharpe in the 88th minute.
The penalty came as a result of a foul of Kevin Wilson inside the penalty area and Sharpe made no mistake in the pressure situation by placing the spot kick in the net.
Jeffrey Maxwell, who recently took over as St Georges coach after the Portland team fired Donovan Duckie who led their promotion into the top flight football competition, said his team did not play to instructions and that cost them the match.
Escape relegation
However, he still believes his team can escape the relegation zone, even though they have lost both games since the start of the fourth round in which the bottom six teams play together.
They are two points ahead of second from bottom Reno, while August Town occupy the cellar position with 34 points.
Of the other bottom six clubs which will automatically drop points against each other, Village United are safe with 45 points, four ahead of Seba on 41.
