Village United avoid the drop
published: Monday | April 28, 2008

Nodley Wright, Freelance Reporter

Village United secured their place as a National Premier League team with a 2-0 win over Seba United at the Elliston Wakeland Centre yesterday.

The win kept them atop the bottom half of the table where the six lesser teams battle to avoid relegation.

Vital strikes

Forward Omar Allen in the 16th minute and captain Troy Smith i n the 80th minute from the penalty spot provided the vital strikes for the home team who are now on 45 points.

Their points total now means that they are almost certain to finish ahead of two teams with three rounds of matches to play.

Even with that being the situation, Village coach Paul 'Tegat' Davis who spearheaded the Trelawny team's revival and subsequent survival after they appeared dead in the water with them sitting at the bottom of the table and well off the pace, was not convinced.

"I think we have three more games to complete to ensure that we are out of the relegation. Another win maybe will convince me that we are really out," said Davis, whose team will next host Arnett Gardens.

Despite looking the more positive of the two teams, Village's win owed a lot to luck as well as the marksmanship of their shooters.

In the first half both teams created and missed chances at will with Seba United the guiltier of the two.

Allen, a consistent provider of goals for his team this season, departed from the game's norm when he showed composure to hit the back of the net in the 16th minute.

Missed chances

More missed chances would follow towards the end of the first half and into the second half but the score would take some time to change - the 80th minute when Leon Irving earned a penalty.

"It was a game of chances. Both teams had a lot of chances. Seba missed theirs and Village took theirs. That is the way football is. Sometimes, it will be balanced and at other times it will be unbalanced. Today was not our day," Seba's Alrick Lynch said.
