August Town's hopes of rising from the bottom of the National Premier League were further diminished yesterday when they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Reno, at the University of the West Indies Bowl.
Both teams were tied at the bottom of the table on 34 points.
However, Reno's victory pushed their tally to 37 points and have further increased their chances of escaping relegation.
Kept up pressure
Reno started out defensively, but opened up the game in the fourth minute from a hard goal executed by Gary McIntosh.
Throughout the game, they executed intense pressure on August Town's in-form forward Mitchily Waul, which kept him unusually quiet.
With the notable absence of prolific striker Daniel Shaw, August Town were further reduced to shambles by the end of the first half.
As play resumed in the second half, both teams began to lose focus as the ball flew high and wide across the field with no evidence of control.
Ziecko Herrera of August Town tried desperately to move the ball forward, but his attempts were blocked by Reno's defence.
Nicholas Smith in an attempt to salvage some face, delivered a strong kick that almost lifted August Town's hopes, but his goal was deemed offside.
Will continue fighting
According to the manager of August Town, Dwight Morgan, the team has yet to succumb to their misfortune and will continue to fight to the end.
"We definitely did not create enough chances to score. It is unfortunate that we did not get an equaliser. However, we have three games left in the season and we will see what happen, based on the outcome," Morgan said.
Meanwhile, Reno's coach Dextor Gilmore stated that overall they had hoped for a positive result.
"We are very happy for our victory and hopefully we can maintain this form going into our next game," Gilmore said.
