No civility in the House
published: Monday | April 28, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I am sure that the Jamaican electorate expect that the 60 members of parliament selected by them will obey the rule of courtesy in all their deliberations in the House. Now more than ever, the youth of the nation must be able to have role models and the first persons they expect to lead the way are the MPs.

Alas, this is not to be judging by the behaviour of our various members in the House. During the Budget Debate this quality of courtesy was sadly lacking and I point to the behaviour of Audley Shaw. Surely, the same points could have been made without sullying the reputation of Dr Omar Davies.

Take the right road

I do hope that Dr Davies will have the good sense to know that a retaliation in kind will not be 'cricket'. He must take the right road and show the Jamaican people that he can reply to criticisms with due courtesy. What was most amazing was the fact that the prime minister at no point indicated to his colleague that 'enough is enough' although during the election campaign he promised a new Jamaica with civility. Well, he missed a wonderful opportunity to show Jamaica that he meant his word.

I am, etc.,
