In a separate letter Mr Duncan writes:In the book The Art of War, written by Sun Tzu 2,000 years ago, he tells of an army trapped in a valley facing an overwhelming force. The general of the trapped army ordered all the horses slain before the battle and his outnumbered trapped army wins an astounding victory.
Sun Tzu explained that the act of destroying all the horses, primarily ridden by officers, made escape possible for no one, not even the general.
Make the sacrifice
The officers and soldiers now had one option, fight or be destroyed. Additionally, his foot soldiers, seeing that the officers could not flee the battlefield, fought with greater commitment and courage, having more confidence in the commands of their leaders.
Jamaica is in a similar position, trapped by economic and social issues that threaten to overwhelm us. The majority of our people have no passport, no visa and nowhere to go.
I think it a small thing to ask our leaders to make the sacrifice to be citizens of Jamaica only, thus saying to us - we are not going anywhere, when it's all said and done we will be here living with the repercussions of the decisions we are making on your behalf.
Maybe one day we will no longer need to have the citizenship clause in our Constitution, but that day is not here yet.
