Feeling shame for Zimbabwe
published: Monday | April 28, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

As I watch the events unfolding in Zimbabwe in frustration, another emotion is also surfacing: shame. As are most Jamaicans, part of my ancestry is in Africa. I am ashamed, not of the behaviour of Robert Mugabe, whom I consider a despot; not of the Zimbabwean security forces, who are simply instruments of the ruling ZANU-PF.

Rather, I am ashamed of the African leaders who can help Zimbabweans, but refuse to do so. I am ashamed of my brother, Thabo Mbeki.

"All it takes for evil to succeed, is for good men to do nothing."

I am, etc.,
