WESTERN BUREAU:
ALTHOUGH JUST missing out on a place in top six, Village United continued their upward march to remain in the National Premier League by beating St Georges 2-0 at Elleston Wakeland on Wednesday.
It was a game which even new St Georges coach Geoffrey Maxwell said Village had the better of play for most of the encounter. "Village were hungrier for the win and they got it," Maxwell said. Paul 'Tegat' Davis, Village's coach, was satisfied with his charges' efforts.
"It was a pretty good game because we had eight of our starters out for various reasons and the Under-21s stepped up and played well," he said.
Village opened the scoring in the 35th minute when returning veteran Shane Crawford placed a well-taken corner for Emille Thomas, who struck with a perfect header. Fabian Dawkins, who was active all game, capitalised for the second goal when he maintained pressure on a defender who headed the ball away to Dawkins, who made no mistake in the 73rd minute. Village had the better of play for most of the game except for about 20 minutes in the second half when Georges held sway.
With four games to go and only a win away from securing a place in the NPL for next season, Village supporters were not afraid to voice the fact that their team would be back in the NPL next season as the clock wound down.
