Flood warning ...
published: Friday | April 25, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The recent flood in Ocho Rios is a warning of a looming environmental problem.

Our streets and gullies are increasingly littered with plastic bottles and containers which eventually wash on to our beaches. Some of the best beaches in the Ocho Rios area were inundated with these containers following the recent heavy rains.

Take action

Our lawmakers must take immediate action to save our environment and perhaps our tourist industry from further pollution. I am sure that anyone who witnessed the garbage that washed up on the beaches of Mamee Bay would be reluctant to return for a vacation.

If we could provide monetary incentives for individuals to collect and return these plastic containers to central government locations, we might begin to solve this pressing problem.

I am, etc.,
