Citizenship: no to political solution
published: Friday | April 25, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

It is reported that Prime Minister Bruce Golding is seeking a political solution to resolve the dual citizenship issue. And that he has advised the general secretary of the JLP, Karl Samuda, to have discussions with the Opposition People's National Party to see whether a political solution could be found.

Our constitution is the supreme law of the land and should not be tinkered with to meet the whims and fancy of politicians in the JLP/PNP. We should demand openness in any discussion of this issue and not allow the JLP and PNP to concoct their solution from behind closed doors.

Amend constitution

One acceptable political solution to my mind should be that the JLP and the PNP move to amend the constitution to remove the 'obscure' clause. Constitutional scholars and other interest groups should wake up from their slumber and ensure that these politicians go through the appropriate process to make the necessary amendment to the constitution.

Until this is done MPs and others who are affected by the court's ruling are in clear violation of our constitution. They should step down or go on leave until this issue is resolved. Their continued presence in Parliament - as if nothing is wrong - show a lack of respect for our constitution and our Supreme Court.

Finally, the attorney general (or the appropriate minister) should uphold the law of our land and move to have all who are in violation of our constitution to step aside forthwith.

I am, etc.,
