WHAT IT'S ABOUT: It's a typical boy-meets-girl romantic comedy with a few unholy twists thrown in for good measure and some laughs. Ben Stiller plays Eddie, a retentive, indecisive commitment phobe who has wasted his years quibbling about the small stuff so he can find an excuse to not say 'I do'. He turns 40 and literally watches the women he loves get married to someone else. This scenario, plus a more than healthy dose of reality from his 'dirty-old-man' father Doc (Jerry Stiller) and best friend Mac (Rob Corddry) lead Eddie to jump the gun way too quickly.
LONG STORY SHORT: Stiller is not a smart guy. He is easily swayed and falls in and out of love just as quickly. The various situations he gets into with the different women - the one he marries after just a week and the one he 'loves' whom he meets on his honeymoon - are the idea on which the movie's title is based. Stiller will always have to break someone's heart or have his heart broken because he is not true to himself or to the women in his life. It's a cautionary tale about love when administered by a nincompoop.
There are some humorous moments - getting hunted and chased back across the Mexican border (it's a long story) and any of the sex scenes (an even longer and more disturbing story) among them. However, there is not much to laugh at. Stiller does not see that his father is the man he could be if he does not marry and his best friend the man he could be if he does get married to the wrong woman. Which is what he does. Twice. Enough said.
THE REEL LOWDOWN: If you liked There's Something About Mary and Dumb and Dumber, you'll probably enjoy this.
