Things we fear
published: Monday | April 21, 2008

Terrible fear

I have this terrible fear of lizards, any size, shape, or colour; as long as they are lizards, I am afraid. One night my boyfriend and I were going out. To save time, he used the bathroom in our room and I went to the other bathroom.

I turned on the lights and heard something running on the windows. When I looked, it was this big, white lizard. I froze, then I started screaming and my boyfriend came running wet and naked. He got the broom and tried hitting the lizard but the broom broke. He then went for the insect spray and matches to burn the lizard. At this point, it began running towards me. My screams got louder and I jumped on top of the basin.

After much deliberation, my boyfriend took me out of the bathroom on his back. It has been almost a month since the incident and I have not been back to that bathroom. Even though my boyfriend searched for the lizard to show me he is not in the bathroom, I'm still not going back. I need more evidence. I need to see the lizard dead.

My dilemma

I have this fear of lizards of any kind. Once I lived beside a lot filled with trees and this added to my dilemma as lizards always come into my bathroom, that has a window facing the lot.

Before having a bath, I would carefully inspect the bathroom and if I saw any, I would shout for my neighbour, who would come and remove them. One morning, I saw one in the bath, so I shouted for my neighbour who came and took it out. Thinking all was safe, I proceeded to have my shower. I felt something running over my foot and when I looked down, it was a lizard.

I screamed and ran straight through the front door wearing only soap suds. I collided with my neighbour who had come running at the sound of my screams. I felt as if I was having a heart attack. My neighbour got me a towel and removed the offending lizard. You can bet I never took anything for granted after that morning.

Next week: If you have a fear of lizards, there is help for you. Follow Lifestyle Co-ordinator Nashauna Drummond who will write about her encounter with a lizard. She will confront her fear through hypnotherapy with psychologist and hypnotherapist Dr Rose Johnson. Get her first-phand account and see if the phobia can really be resolved.

THINGS WE FEAR

You know them, the creepy crawlies that just get under your skin and will have you on the tabletop in two seconds, screaming for murder.

The dreaded croaking lizards, frogs, roaches, rats, snakes and even dogs, are, for most of us, our worst nightmare.

So if you fear these or any other insect or animal, write us and tell us about it and your encounter.

Can these fears be controlled with hypnotherapy or a visit from the exterminator? We'll let you know.

Email your fears to us at lifestyle@gleanerjm.com or address to the Flair, 7 North Street, Kingston.
