Big four in super clashes
published: Saturday | April 19, 2008

An intriguing fifth round of Super League matches will get going this morning with a number of West Indies players, including Jerome Taylor and Marlon Samuels, down to participate.

Dubbed the 'Super Weekend', the top four teams Melbourne Kangaroos, St Elizabeth Sharks, St Catherine Saints and Trelanwy Buccaneers will contest the top two matches.

The Kangaroos, second on 13 points, will play St Elizabeth, who are third on 10 points. Leaders St Catherine Saints, on 16, will host Trelawny Buccaneers, who lie fourth on eight points.

The game at Alpart is likely to feature a showdown between two West Indies players, as fast bowler Taylor looks set to turn out for the Sharks against the Kangaroos, who will welcome the return of middle-order batsman Samuels.

Batting strength

Samuels is expected to add much batting strength that was missing in Melbourne's line-up last week, while his West Indies teammates will be hoping otherwise.

Carlton Baugh Jr, Damion Henry and Yannick Elliott - all having recorded centuries this season - are also expected to contribute heavily to the batting, while orthodox spinner Nikita Miller, who has taken 19 wickets, is the danger man with the ball. Elliott and Damion Jacobs are also very good bowlers.

With Taylor firing away from one end, there is always the chance that Melbourne won't score a big total, especially as the Sharks also have the league's leading bowler in off-spinner Wayne Simpson, and leg-spinner Aton Beckford, in their line-up.

The Sharks' batting, however, is unpredictable as they have struggled for most parts of the season. However, Damion Ebanks and Shane Powell can explode at any time.

Doing well

At Chedwin Park, the improved Buccaneers, thanks to the consistent Lorenzo Ingram with bat and ball, Barbadians Floyd Reifer and Kurt Wilkinson, have been doing very well and the Saints cannot be too comfortable.

Ingram has scored 452 runs at an average of 90.40, the most by any batsman this season, and with Wilkinson and Floyd Reifer, the Buccaneers are as strong as any other team.

The Saints are also very strong in both departments. Tamar Lambert, Barbadian Dwayne Smith, Keith Hibbert and Danza Hyatt will lead the batting, while in the bowling division they are strongly represented by leg-spinners Gavin Wallace and Odean Brown, who has 20 wickets including a 10-wicket match haul, and off-spinner Bevon Brown, along with paceman Andre Russell.
