Negril meet Wadadah in first-leg showdown
published: Saturday | April 19, 2008

WESTERN BUREAU:

Former National Premier League (NPL) outfit Wadadah and last year's beaten finalist Negril will lock horns at the Frome Sports Ground in Westmoreland this afternoon in the first leg final of the Captain's Bakery Super League.

The teams earned their place in the final by virtue of their respective semi-final wins over defending champions Granville and Salt Spring.

Wadadah defeated Granville 4-3 on penalties after their two-way semi-finals (0-0 and 2-2), while Negril defeated Salt Spring 3-2 on aggregate (1-2 and 2-0).

Looking ahead to today's game, Wadadah's coach Delroy Delisser said his team, which was relegated from the NPL two seasons ago, has its sights firmly set on getting back into the big league.

"We have prepared well for this season because we have our sights set on getting back into the NPL competition," said Delisser. "Our victory against Granville is a clear indication that we are on track."

The Negril team, which has been in the last three Super League finals, is also bubbling with confidence and according to top striker Howard Phillips, it is about time they go all the way.

"We have been one of the most consistent teams in the league and we believe that after so many years of trying, we need to get into the NPL," said Phillips. "We are very confident as a unit that this year will be our year."

In their bid for victory, Wadadah will be banking on the likes of wily striker Curtis Palmer, midfielders Rohan Reid and Raphael Palmer and stalwart defender Mark Williams. For their part, Negril will be banking on Phillips, Rohan Campbell and Oshane Hill.

The champions will not only earn qualification for the NPL elimination, but will also walk away with the Captain's Bakery Trophy and $150,000.
