YOU GO to the store to buy a new bikini. You try it on and you're impressed with the fit. You turn around to see how it looks from behind, and then your heart sinks. Staring back at you are those pesky dimples on the back of your thighs and buttocks. That darn cellulite!
Cellulite refers to pockets of fat which are trapped, causing dimpling in the skin. This dimpling is irregular and patchy and has been identified with orange peel. Ninety per cent of post-adolescent women go on to develop cellulite at some point in their lives, although it is hardly ever seen in men. The thighs, buttocks and the abdomen are the most common areas for women to develop cellulite.
Physiological changes
Cellulite formation is a manifestation of complex physiological changes that occur in the subcutaneous fat layer of the skin. Regular exercise and balanced diet do not always reverse, or prevent, cellulite formation. However, an unhealthy lifestyle will make the overall appearance worse over time because of poor nutrition, weight gain and insufficient water intake.
With age, there is a loss in the thickness and tone of the connective tissue in the superficial fat layer and dermis of the skin. Unfortunately noticeable, flaccid cellulite is the result.
The Fighters
Creams which contain herbs, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. These ASSIST the skin in becoming softer, healthier and smoother, allowing it to repair itself more easily.
Creams which contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatories: These stimulate the flow of blood. The areas affected by cellulite are usually dry and damaged, therefore needing additional moisture, increased blood supply and protection.
The Fixers
A detox diet is a great way to start fighting cellulite. This means lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains. It also means eliminating coffee, sodas, smoking and alcohol from your life.
Exercise! Exercise is important in aiding proper circulation. It firms muscles and the tissues surrounding the muscles.
Get a massage. Massages not only pamper, they also assist in fighting and preventing cellulite. Massages help restore the body's natural inclinations by manipulating the muscles and stimulating the circulatory and lymphatic systems that break down fatty tissue. Massages target areas that are difficult to stimulate with exercise alone.
Your skin can improve by using the remedies outlined. Don't expect overnight success, but little by little you should see small improvements. There are, of course, options in cosmetic surgery for removing cellulite, but that's usually a last resort - unless you're a Hollywood star!
