I have nothing towear
published: Saturday | April 19, 2008

It's probably safe to say that we've all made this exclamation several times while getting ready to go out, standing in front of a relatively full closet, pulling our hair out, lamenting, "I have nothing to wear!"

Here are a few quick tips to help solve that problem.

-Traci-Ann Wint

Clean out your closet! Go through your clothing collection and eliminate items that don't fit or that you haven't worn in a year. This is not the time to be sentimental. That fabulous dress hasn't looked fabulous on you in years. Accept that it probably never will, and move on.

Make a list of all the items you need in your wardrobe. Keep it practical, for example, white shirt, black pants or a black bag.

Stop buying on impulse! If you follow this trend, your wardrobe will be filled with meaningless clothes.

Only purchase clothing that can go with something that you already own.

Try to keep colours and patterns basic and flattering for the most part. Buy more solids than prints and use accessories to add zest to your outfits.

Layer and mix and match. For example, for work, keep your pants and blazer colours basic and get various coloured shirts to wear underneath. It will look like a new outfit each day!

Don't buy anything that doesn't fit well, regardless of how great a bargain it is.

Most important, keep your closet in check, eliminating items you don't wear or that don't fit as time passes and replacing necessary pieces.

After the elimination process, take note of what's left in your wardrobe. This inventory will help you get a solid idea of your favourite colours, styles, etc.

Perhaps it's a shoe that's been hiding for months.
